Week 7: September 19-23
Dear Parents and Fourth Graders,
We had a productive week in fourth grade! Students were busy interpreting data and analyzing graphs, identifying character traits of characters in their books, and writing personal narratives. We also have been working really hard on our "Data Notebooks" for conferences. If you have not yet signed up for conferences, please do so online. Last Friday, I sent home a letter with information on how to sign up. October is coming soon, so please make that a priority!
Thank you to all of my students and parents who could attend the vigil or ceremony for Olivia. I'm sure Max and his family felt the love and support from our school and community. I felt very proud of our class as they signed a card for Max and offered him kind words in the hallway. Please keep their family in your thoughts over the coming weeks.
We earned all of our Starbucks for the 2nd time! Our class voted on how we'd like to celebrate, and they chose a class pet. Although we had some creative suggestions, like a hairless cat or a puppy, we decided a Beta Fish would be the best fit. We'll vote on a name for our new fish on Monday! We were the first class to earn all of our Starbucks for the second time!
We've planned our first field trip of the year! It's coming up in October! Please view this document for more information. I'll send these permission slips with the students on Monday!
Please take note of the following dates:

Week 5: September 5-9
Dear Parents and Fourth Graders,
Thank you so much for your well-wishes and "Congratulations" this week! It's so fun to share with my students the excitement of getting engaged. They've been so sweet and happy for Rocky and I, which is awesome to see. We are very excited and plan on getting married sometime next July!
This week, we finished up our unit on rounding and estimating. We also continued drafting our personal narratives, learned about theme, and worked on identifying parts of speech. Next week, we'll begin our unit on Data Analysis, continue revising and editing our personal narratives, and learn about making inferences as we read. Upcoming assessments include a word study quiz on Thursday, a graphing quiz on Friday, and a plural nouns quiz on Friday.
Please help your child with homework by making sure it's complete and in their "Homework Pocket" each day. I've had quite a few students in study hall because they're bringing their finished homework to school each day.
*Picture day is Tuesday, September 13th at 1:30.

Dear Parents and Fourth Graders,
We had another exceptional week in 4th grade! This week, we continued working on place value, setting, and writing personal narratives. Next week, we'll review place value, learn about theme, and edit our personal narratives. As you may have heard, my dad came to volunteer in our room on Monday! He worked with a small group during math, read with a few students, and wrote his own personal narrative for us! It was great having him here and I think the students really enjoyed meeting him. He was very impressed with the work-ethic and behavior in our class!
Please take note of the following dates:
Monday, September 5: Labor Day (No School)
Tuesday, September 6: Sparkles Skate Night
Friday, September 9: PTA Movie Night
Tuesday, September 13: School Pictures
Click here to see what we're going to work on next week, our class specials rotation, and upcoming assignments. Please take a look at our class wish list if you'd like to donate items. Don't forget to check out our 4th grade photos! I haven't uploaded the photos from Monday, but I'll try to do that over the long weekend. As always, email me if you have any questions or concerns. Week 3: August 22-26
Dear Parents and Fourth Graders,
Our class is on a roll and has now mastered all three workshop models (Reading, Writing, and Math)! They are engaged in learning during each subject area throughout the day. Please congratulate your child on a job well done learning the expectations! I'm constantly impressed by how considerate, respectful, and hard-working our class is. I am one lucky teacher!
On Monday, we enjoyed a class kickball game to celebrate earning all of our Starbucks. Rocky even joined us and was one of the team captains. Rocky's team beat Miss T's team in a close game, with a score of 6-4. He also surprised us with "Bomb Pops" because my class is "the bomb!" We're now working on the "A" so we can quickly earn a second reward.
Thank you for coming to Curriculum Night! I enjoyed talking with you and sharing additional information about our class. I apologize if you didn't get the time to speak with me directly. Please feel free to send me an email or set up a conference if you have any concerns. I've put the papers you need in your child's "Return to School" side of the Daily Folder. Please tear out and sign the bottom page in the orange AKS brochure. Send that back to me via the "Return to School" folder. Also, take a look at the letter from our room mom, Becky Hale.
Next Friday, Carol Yochem will begin guidance with our class. She'll give a brief introduction of the counseling program, focusing specifically on conflict resolution. Ask your child if he or she has learned any new stratgies to try!
Please take note of the following dates:
Friday, August 26: Oasis Bowling Spirit Night
Monday, August 29: Mixed Bag Designs orders due

Week 2: August 15-19
Dear Parents and Fourth Graders,
We had an another successful week in 4th grade! This class continues to impress me with their manners, respect for others, and enthusiasm for school. I feel incredibly fortunate to be teaching such an enjoyable group of young people. We even finished spelling "Starling" today and will be celebrating on Monday! We're the first class in the WHOLE school to earn this reward!
Mrs. Witmer is asking for parents to donate cans of shaving cream for the art room. I'm not sure what project she's using that for, but I'm sure it'll be fun!
Curriculum Night for Grades 3-5 is scheduled for next Thursday, August 25th, at 6:30 pm. Please plan to meet in the cafeteria for a PTA and fourth grade presentation, followed by a teacher "Meet and Greet." We'll be presenting important information about this school year, so I hope you can make it!
Please support Starling Elementary's PTA fundraiser. Our PTA is very active and funds collected help pay for things like Accelerated Reader, Family Movie Night, Technology, Student Recognition, and much more! You'll find a Mixed Bag Designs catalog in your child's Friday folder. Please take a look, as they make great gifts (hint, hint)! If you'd like to purchase or sell these items, use the envelope to collect your orders. Be sure to have your friends and family members make payments to you so you can make one payment for your order. Do NOT enter your orders online (PTA will do that for you). The envelope is due Monday, August 29th.
Please take note of the following dates:

Week 1: August 8-12
Dear Parents and Fourth Graders,
We had an amazing week in Fourth grade! I am completely impressed with my students' respect, manners, motivation, and willingness to learn! We've already earned our S-T-A-R-L, which means we're well on our way to be the first class to spell "Starling." They've also earned lots of "drops in the bucket," which they can fill you in on. We're working hard as we set up classroom expectations for The Daily 5 (Readers' Workshop), Math Workshop, and Writers' Workshop.
I'm happy to announce that Becky Hale (Porter's mom) has volunteered to be our room mom. We're excited to have her working with us and can't wait to see what she's got in store!
Please take note of the following dates:
Tuesday, August 16: Sparkles Skate Night
